Yummy! This was terrific and yes, absolutely budget friendly. I didn’t want to buy catalina dressing just for this. We used regular ranch. But can I ask a question – is it worth it to try with catalina? If you recommend, I’ll give it a go – who knows maybe we’ll like it even better!

I’m looking to make this salad this weekend for a get together with friends. I’ve always loved it, but never tried it myself. I do have a question however. the recipe calls for an entire bottle of catalina dressing and says to add it in before it is served. Has anyone ever felt like it was too much dressing? I’m thinking of trying less, but I don’t want to not get the right effect. Please reply and let me know if anyone has tried this!

We also thought it was too much. We’re definitely cutting back next time.

    • DENISE M FLOOD says

I actually put the dressing on the side so folks can add however much they like. That way if any is leftover, it doesn’t get so soggy.

    • Jess Jankowski says

That’s what I do too actually because my husband is rarely home at dinner-time!

I’ve made this numerous times, I add the dressing, ( Catalina, or French, or Russian), all give it that kick, a little at a time, depends on the amount of meat , veggies I have in, the kids like yellow and red peppers in there as well.

I definitely have the chips, salsa, sour cream, cheese, beans, On the side, large family, not all like everything.

great salad though, big hit whenever I make, or bring it somewhere.

I have made this twice, the first time I didn’t have catalina dressing and used ranch dressing, which was great!! The second time I wanted to try the catalina dressing and it was even greater! But the second time I made it I Forgot the hamburger! I happened to have have sausage, oh my, that and the catalina dressing absolutely makes it. Definitely serving the Doritos on the side. This recipe is a keeper.
